Description

Pursuant to Executive Order (EO) 14179 and subsequent memorandum OMB M-25-21, federal research teams need practical ways to use AI while protecting research data, maintaining scientific integrity, and following agency requirements. In addition, in compliance with EO 14303 Restoring Gold Standard Science (GSS), agency researchers are required to use accurate and reliable data collection and reporting techniques to maintain scientific integrity and improve innovation.

Successful research organizations like the IR-4 Project for USDA are illustrative of how well-designed data collection and management are necessary to achieve both GSS and leverage the power of emerging AI tools with accurate and verifiable studies that can be used in support of agency missions.

AI Guardrails

Guidance governing what areas of research AI should be allowed to access is well defined – but not clearly understood. The session will provide practical examples of permissions, approved environments, and responsible data handling to protect research data. Using GSS principles as a foundation, examples will be provided to show how trustworthy research requires traceable sources, documented methods, consistent data, and accountable human review.

Active USDA Case Study

Attendees will learn about IR-4’s documented electronic Field Data Book implementation with iAdvantage Software, followed by a clearly identified conceptual AI extension. The e-Study data collection platform is consistent with GSS guidelines, as well as the EPA State E-Enterprise for the Environment’s goal of improving data quality through increased collaboration in environmental data and system-sharing amongst the EPA, states, and tribes to better achieve environmental protection benefits.

Additionally, the IR-4 Project's implementation of the e-Study iAdvantage platform for Electronic Field Data Books, including the design protocols that support high levels of data integrity with real-time oversight for project management, and a potential AI extension that checks records within the authorized environment and gives reviewers a source-linked issue queue will also be discussed.

Recommended attending personnel

Recommended attending personnel will include SES leadership, scientific personnel, data collection support personnel, program personnel, and personnel responsible for maximizing agency R&D program effectiveness as well as procurement personnel who support these functions.
